When people cry about "wokeness", what they're ACTUALLY referring to is usually the white moderates MLK complained about and not actual leftists. "Progressives" and Republicans are both happy to pretend that liberals are the left. Any American too young to remember the antiglobalization movement and the Ralph Nader campaign has never actually witnessed a "left."

The black women who came up with "identity politics" were ALREADY socialists, so criticism from class reductionists that assumes liberals made up identity politics is usually redundant and cringey. "White moderates don't want to talk about class" is not profound or unexpected.

It's white liberals playing the game of "cancel culture" where you lose if you're perceived as a racist and therefore a bad person. Actual leftists don't assume the liberal subject. They assume everyone has internalized b.s to work on.

It's convenient for those with power to pretend that liberals as far left as you can go because they are as far as you can go without actually threatening existing power structures.

Most Liberals who have come to the conclusion that class is the central category for understanding politics and the proletariat is the revolutionary agent, then great. I think you've met particularly good leftists, though. 

Modern Liberals (i.e mainstream American 'left') who are full of woke, SJW narratives, idealist arguments, elitist counterculture, postmodern social constructionism, an obsession with creating problems where there were none (like "manspreading", "cultural appropriation"), superiority, looking for excuses to call people homophobic or whatever, etc. 

This includes actual leftists like *tankies and anarchist liberals who bully anyone who isn't in lockstep and vilify leftists like Contrapoints just for sharing their experiences
